Do You Have Any Last Words?

What can a man say,
As he sits in the electric chair?
As the people around him have the power
And intention
To end his life.
"Do you have any last words?"
What is a man supposed to say?
"This man is insane."
"This man isn't human."
"This man is not like us."
That man is EXACTLY like you and
The more you distance yourself from
His deeds,
The more you perpetuate the misunderstanding
That created him.
A child is murdered,
And the best way to avenge her is to kill another
Person?
What sense is that?
Evil begets evil
And nothing justifies capital punishment.
I understand your loss, but you must
Take hold of his evil and create good with it.
Teach this man forgiveness because he obviously
Has not learned.
I'm saying, if you give this man a chance to recover
And inspect himself,
I believe that you can use his own murder as the
Driving force in his redemption and change.
If I were a serial killer's final victim,
I would DEMAND that he not face death,
But himself.
Insanity aside,
These killers are human,
Whether you accept that or not
Makes no difference in its validity.
Speaking about it as unworldly only mystifies it
That much more.
We have to face this unwanted side of humanity,
And understand it.
Ending life is not unthinkable, it's not barbaric,
It's human.
End this hypocrisy of justifying deaths here but
Condemning it elsewhere.
The government can kill, but the people can't.
What kind of message are you sending to these
Unstable people?
Banish the penalty of death because it serves no purpose.
Changing a man through your compassion and the memory
Of your loved one will produce a living visible
Result that you can cherish much more than a
Day of execution.
This is realism.
This is against our violent nature, I understand,
But if you're looking for a way to comfort yourself through
Tragedy, or to prevent it or make it a less often occurrence
Then this is it,
This is the best way.
The summit where Tamatea, the man with the big knees, the climber of mountains, the land-swallower who travelled about, played his nose flute to his loved one.
